Xiaomi, a powerhouse cellphone manufacturer especially in China, is jumping into VR in a big way. In addition to being one of Google’s partners in their Daydream program, Xiaomi has also released their own low-cost headset designed primarily to work with their own phones. The Mi VR has been released only in China for now.
A built-in motion sensor (obviating the need to rely on a cellphone’s orientation sensor) helps reduce latency for a smoother experience. It also will come with a handheld controller boasting a 9-axis motion sensor and a touchpad, similar to the HTC Vive’s.
The most surprising thing about this release is the price announced for the device: RMB199, or a very reasonable $29 for what appears to be a well-built and capable device.
