Microsoft is teasing the specs of the upcoming Xbox Project “Scorpio”, which will be powerful and VR – ready.
“Teasing” is still the correct word to use even with the additional info Microsoft has released, since the details consist of the following:
- CPU: Eight custom x86 cores clocked at 2.3GHz
- GPU: 40 customized compute units at 1172MHz
- Memory: 12GB GDDR5
- Memory Bandwidth: 326GB/s
- Hard Drive: 1TB 2.5-inch
- Optical Drive: 4K UHD Blu-ray
No details were released on interesting geeky details such as the fabrication process, what sort of compute units, consisting of how many ALUs per actual processing core, although the Digital Foundry preview video about Scorpio speculates about many of these internal specifications. Even stuff about how it will integrate with existing and upcoming VR units has not been revealed – yet.
Microsoft has staked out 4K performance and VR Readiness as absolute requirements though, and even with just the sparse info listed above, we can be sure this is already the most powerful console among its peers. The best news is that it’s slated for a 2017 holiday release.
